What are dental implants?

Implants are synthetic structures attached to your jaw where a natural tooth has been lost. They’re anchored to the jawbone or metal framework on the bone and act as a support or “root” for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. Implants can also be used to attach a removable bridge.

Dental implants and the artificial teeth that get attached to them are so well-designed that they very closely mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. The implants are usually made of synthetic yet biocompatible materials such as ceramic or metal.

What are the benefits of implants?

In addition to their more natural appearance compared to dentures, dental implants don’t slip or slide as dentures can. This makes eating easier and puts even the most difficult to chew foods back on your favorites menu. It also eliminates the risk of sliding dentures interfering with your speech.

Other benefits of dental implants over dentures include improved:

  • Comfort
  • Self-esteem
  • Oral health
  • Durability
  • Convenience

Who can have dental implants?

Most people are good candidates for dental implants. For a successful implant to take hold, however, you must have proper bone density and a strong immune system. Like any restoration, implants require diligent oral hygiene and proper dental care to ensure they last a lifetime.

How are dental implants placed?

Surgery is necessary to prepare the area for an implant and place the implant into the jawbone. Following the procedure, a period of six to 12 weeks  is required for the implant area to heal and for jawbone tissue to fuse it.

Metal posts are inserted into the implant during a follow-up procedure. These posts are secured to the implant and extend above the gum line as the anchor for your replacement tooth.

Because implants require surgery, patients are receive anesthesia and, if necessary, antibiotics to stave off infection following the procedure. All implant surgery takes place as an outpatient procedure in the Trident Cosmetic and Family Dentistry offices.

Most patients report less discomfort with implant procedures than that associated with a tooth extraction. Any discomfort can be relieved with analgesics such as acetaminophen.
