Is professional teeth whitening right for you?

As we age and our teeth experience long-term exposure to stain-producing agents like berries, coffee and red wine, discoloration inevitably emerges. Fortunately, a professional teeth whitening treatment is a safe, low-risk and incredibly effective way for most of our Beverly Hills patients to transform their appearance, treat yellow or brown stains and achieve a bright and sparkling smile.

With that said, professional teeth whitening is not recommended for individuals who have:

  • Porcelain veneers, crowns or dental bonding, as these artificial materials don’t respond well to bleaching agents.
  • Intrinsic stains, which are characterized by white or gray areas which reflect damage to the deep underlying layers of the teeth.
  • Worn enamel or extremely sensitive teeth, as the bleaching agent may worsen these issues.

Professional teeth whitening vs. over-the-counter options

Many of our Culver City patients inquire about the safety and effectiveness of over-the-counter whitening options, such as strips, pre-made trays, gels, toothpastes and rinses, compared to professional in-office treatments. And the reality is that while these over-the-counter options will lighten your teeth a shade or two, they’re simply not as effective as an in-office treatment. Plus, they may contain abrasive substances that can wear away your enamel over time, leading to substantial problems down the road. For both of these reasons, if you’re looking for a safe and effective way to transform your smile and dramatically brighten your appearance, professional teeth whitening is the clear choice.

Whitening and brightening your smile at Trident Dentistry

Your in-office whitening treatment will take place in the comfort of our Los Angeles office. To begin, one of our friendly dental hygienists will gently clean your teeth and gums, clearing away any food particles, bacteria, plaque and tartar. From there, we’ll place a barrier over your gums to prevent the whitening gel from irritating your soft tissues. We will then apply the powerful whitening agent to your teeth, covering all exposed surfaces evenly to ensure a flawless and natural final result. In most cases, we will reapply the gel in intervals. For example, once the gel has been on your teeth for a set period of time, we’ll remove it and have you wait about ten minutes before applying it again. We’ll typically repeat this process about three times until we’ve achieved the bright, white and beautiful smile you deserve.
